Notions User Research

This week I reached out to crafters in my community to find out what their favorite notions and supplies are. I asked them to list their top 5 - 10, but I think some of the people could have also listed a lot more.

Craft: Soft Circuitry

  • Scissors (paper, fabric and thread, I want three scissors with me)
  • Pen and notebook
  • Rulers or measure tape
  • Aligator clips
  • LEDs
  • Conductive thread and fabric
  • Needles
  • Batteries
  • Multimeter

Crafts: Sewing, Knitting, Crochet, Weaving, Embroidery, Needlepoint

  • Good scissors (for sewing) and they must never be used for anything but cutting textiles, so they stay really sharp.
  • Seam ripper
  • Circular knitting needles
  • Clear plastic sleeves that I put knitting patterns in
  • Iron & ironing board
  • Altoids tin that I keep a bunch of tiny notions in

"That is truly the tip of the iceberg. I find that the much more difficult task is organizing and storing it all..."

My list is fairly extensive, but I use most of these tools almost every day. Some people I surveyed said they tried to narrow it down to one specific craft, because it was too difficult to choose. While I was originally hoping to find a lot of overlap in order to help limit what I add to the final garment, I think it may actually be a better idea to have a harness with interchangeable parts. When the wearer learns a new craft, they can wear the tools around like a badge. If pieces could snap on and off based on the user's preference for the day, it could be a much more functional garment.
